How the Process Works

Step 1: Contact me, via email, at dz@zemkeprofessionalservices.com.
Step 2: Forward a random page or two of the document as a PDF file, prior to Step 3.
Step 3: Meet with me, via phone, email, or Zoom. We'll discuss your needs and goals for the services.
Step 4: If you agree to engage my services, we'll set up a timeline for the work. I can usually complete normal proofreading/editing within 7 days.
Step 5: You will forward your document as a Word document. Please also forward a copy of the formatting requirements for the intended receiver of the work (e.g., journal, conference submission, graduate school, etc.).
Step 6: I'll forward a PDF of the first couple of pages when the document is ready. If the work looks good to you, I'll forward the entire project as a Word document with Track Changes and comments turned on. I can also provide a certificate or statement that the document was professionally proofread, if needed.
Step 7: I'll be available for 2 weeks after returning the document(s) to you for questions or concerns. After that time, I will delete your files to ensure you maintain complete control over your work.

Proofreading and Editing

The following pricing structure applies to journal submissions, dissertations, theses, books, and other typical publications. I can work in most business disciplines as well as most social science areas. I do not proofread/edit work in the hard sciences at this time. The word count on which the per-word cost is based includes abstracts, main document text, tables/figures, and references.

Simple proofreading

$0.025/word

This works best for a document that is relatively cleanly written. I recommend that you proofread for content, spelling, grammar, and formatting before sending it to me.

Intensive proofreading

$0.035/word

This works best if you have not had time to proofread and/or if writing in English is not your strong suit, either as a native speaker or as a second (or third...or fourth!) language.

We will need to discuss your goals prior to determining a price for this work. The price will depend on the number of words that will need to be cut as well as where you'd prefer them to be cut.

Formatting

We will need to discuss your goals prior to determining a price for this work. Generally speaking, I can easily format documents in the APA, MLA, and Chicago styles. If you require references to be formatted, you will need to provide complete references, including DOI numbers, if your publication outlet requires them (I will not be able to look them up). The copy/paste citations you may get from a journal often will not be compliant with the style manual, despite what the system says.

Cross-checking citations and references

I will cross-check all in-text citations and references to ensure that all citations are referenced, and all references are cited.

"Pre-reviewing"

I may be able to do a pre-review of your work prior to submission. While I do not review for journals anymore, I have served as a reviewer for dozens of them in the past. I will provide basic comments about the work for no additional charge when proofreading. However, if you'd like me to do an intensive review to identify opportunities to improve the content, we can discuss this option.
